ranslational Neuroimaging: Tools for CNS Drug Discovery, Development and Treatment combines the experience of academic, clinical and industrial neuroimagers in a unique collaborative approach to provide an integrated perspective of the use of small animal and human brain imaging in developing and validating translational models and biomarkers for the study and treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders. Translational Neuroimaging: Tools for CNS Drug Discovery, Development and Treatment examines the translational role of neuroimaging in model development from preclinical animal models, to human experimental medicine, and finally to clinical studies. The focus of this book is to identify and provide common endpoints between species that can serve to inform both the clinic and the bench with the information needed to accelerate clinically-effective CNS drug discovery. This book covers methodical issues in human and animal neuroimaging translational research as well as detailed applied examples of the use of neuroimaging in neuropsychiatric disorders and the development of drugs for their treatment. The daily pictures of refugee camps, mostly in Africa, make one wonder as to how the refugees manage to survive under these abject conditions. This path-breaking study of Somalis, in a camp in Kenya, offers some explanations. The author argues that it is wrong to look at the camps in isolation, but that one has to consider historical, social and transnational dimensions if one wants to understand the coping mechanisms that enable people to survive. Her book shows how Somalis were able to adapt their “nomadic” heritage to life in the camp, including a high degree of mobility and strong social networks that also reach beyond the confines of the camp as far as the US and Europe.

The book opens on the day his close friend Pop, a celebrated hunter, leaves Ernest in charge of the safari camp and news arrives of a potential attack from a hostile tribe. Drama continues to build as his wife, Mary, pursues the great black-maned lion that has become her obsession and Ernest becomes involved with a young African girl whom he supposedly plans to take as a second bride. Increasingly enchanted by the local African community, he struggles between the attraction of these two women and the wildly different cultures they represent. Spicing his depictions of human longings with sharp humor, Hemingway captures the excitement of big-game hunting and the unparalleled beauty of the landscape. Rich in laughter, beauty and profound insight. True at First Light is an extraordinary publishing event — a breathtaking final work from one of our most beloved and important writers.
If we trust someone we put ourselves at risk, but we do sovoluntarily. In business there may be no way of clinching that dealwithout engaging in that personal risk, but to deny or externalisethat risk is to enter the world of blame and misuse of power. Thisbook reconnects our intuitive understanding of trust with the rootsof business risk.
When there is a strong enough trust between parties in a businessenvironment, you can:
* Be aware of far more of the workings of the environment, including how to generate value for other stakeholders
* Strengthen business relationships which help to deal withunimagined opportunities and contingencies
* Understand how to develop lean business processes withoutunnecessary or counterproductive management activities
* Manage business risks that could otherwise play havoc with thebusiness
When business people deny the importance of trust, when some oftheir business relationships become cynical and exploitative, thena cycle is formed: lack of trust leads to cynical actions andcynical actions lead to a further erosion of trust. In this book,Aidan Ward and John Smith teach how to trust others and pinpointreal ris k in business.
This is an important book. In a whole series of ways this study of contemporary Naples will set a bench-mark for urban studies and the way urban history is carried out. It is a book about Naples and thus about the particularities and peculiarities of that specific city. However, this is also a book which goes way beyond Naples itself. It has a lot to tell us about the way the city can and should be studied – about urban studies methodologies – and in this area it is highly original and in some ways sets a new agenda for other researchers, historians, anthropologists, ethnologists, and those using cultural studies approaches. John Foot, University College London This is one of the best books I have read: beautifully written and extremely well researched (a refreshing mix of archival research and participant observation) and superbly theorized, with an impressive knowledge of the range of urban theory, as well as meticulous historical contextualization. Jo Labanyi, New York University …[A]n interesting and readable text. It is scholarly, ambitious in scope and well written.
One of the foremost scholars on Turkish migration, the author offers in this work the summary of her experiences and research on Turkish migration since 1963. During these forty years her aim has been threefold: to explain the journeys made by thousands of Turkish men and women to foreign lands out of choice, necessity, or invitation; to shed light on the difficulties they faced; and to elaborate on how their lives were affected by the legal, political, social, and economic measures in the countries where they settled. The extensive research done both in Turkey and in Europe into the lives of individuals directly and indirectly affected by the migration phenomenon and the examination of these research results further enhances the value of this wide-ranging study as a definitive reference work.
It all begins with a fugitive billionaire and the promise of a cash reward. Turtles All the Way Down is about lifelong friendship, the intimacy of an unexpected reunion, Star Wars fan fiction and tuatara. But at its heart is Aza Holmes, a young woman navigating daily existence within the ever-tightening spiral of her own thoughts. In his long-awaited return, John Green shares Aza’s story with shattering, unflinching clarity.
Inspired by 2,000 years of storytelling yet rooted in the concerns of our present moment, this is a spectacular achievement–enchanting, both very funny and terrifying. It is narrated by our descendants 1000 years hence, looking back on “The War of the Worlds” that began with “the time of the strangeness’s”: a simple gardener begins to levitate; a baby is born with the unnerving ability to detect corruption in people; the ghosts of two long-dead philosophers begin arguing once more; and storms pummel New York so hard that a crack appears in the universe, letting in the destructive djinns of myth (as well as some graphic superheroes). Nothing less than the survival of our world is at stake. Only one, a djinn princess who centuries before had learned to love humankind, resolves to help us: in the face of dynastic intrigue, she raises an army composed of her semi-magical great-great–etc.–grandchildren–a motley crew of endearing characters who come together to save the world in a battle waged for 1,001 nights–or, to be precise, two years, eight months and twenty-eight nights.
Ultrasonic energy can be applied to surgical instruments for cutting, dissecting, and coagulating vessels and/or tissue. This book presents the use of ultrasound energy as it is used in UltraCision products, for use in surgery on many parts of the body.
Principles of UltraCision technology: The instruments are attached to a hand piece, which is connected to a generator. The ultrasonic system is situated inside the hand piece and transforms the electric energy into mechanical movement, producing in this way longitudinal vibrations of the blades at approx. 55 kHz per second. The movement of the blades causes collagen molecules to vibrate inside the tissues, thus forming a coagulum upon their denaturation. This method is especially useful in parenchymatous organs, where dissection can be performed cleanly and with little or no bleeding.
Fin-de-Siécle Vienna has become the glorified icon of innovative modernism in the arts and letters. Yet the misery of the masses in the suburbs stood in stark contrast to the urban social order of the wealthy elites who were facing the new ‘collective subjects’of emerging mass politics. The aesthetically highly differentiated culture of these elites opposed a culture of the masses stigmatized as profane and vulgar. Furthermore, their skeptical discourse of reason rooted in the late bourgeois enlightenment was in stark contrast to the irrational ferment of a ‘politics of feeling’that found expression in (German) nationalism and anti-Semitism.
In his landmark international bestsellers guns, germs and Steel and collapse, Jared Diamond transformed our understanding of what makes civilizations rise and fall. Now in the third book in this monumental trilogy, he reveals how successful nations recover from crisis. Diamond shows us how seven countries have survived defining upheavals in the recent past – from the forced opening up of Japan and the Soviet invasion of Finland to the Pinochet regime in Chile – through selective change, a process of painful self-appraisal and adaptation more commonly associated with personal trauma. Looking ahead to the future, he investigates whether the United States, and the world, are squandering their natural advantages and are on a devastating path towards catastrophe. Is this fate inevitable? Or can we still learn from the lessons of the past? Exhibiting the awe-inspiring grasp of history, Geography, economics and anthropology that marks all Diamond’s work, upheaval reveals how both nations and individuals can become more resilient. The result is a book epic in scope, but also his most personal yet.
New York Times bestselling author Dan Heath asks what happens when we take our thinking upstream and try to prevent problems before they happen. Why ‘solve’ crimes when we could stop them being committed? Why treat chronic diseases when they could be prevented from developing? Why provide shelter for the homeless rather than working to keep people housed in the first place? Why do our efforts skew so heavily towards reaction rather than prevention? We all have a tendency to work around problems. We are resourceful. We improvise. We’re so accustomed to managing emergencies as they strike that we often don’t stop to think about how we could prevent crises before they happen.
Re-examining Mary Douglas’ work on pollution and concepts of purity, this volume explores modern expressions of these themes in urban areas, examining the intersections of material and cultural pollution. It presents ethnographic case studies from a range of cities affected by globalization processes such as neoliberal urban policies, privatization of urban space, continued migration and spatialized ethnic tension. What has changed since the appearance of Purity and Danger? How have anthropological views on pollution changed accordingly? This volume focuses on cultural meanings and values that are attached to conceptions of ‘clean’ and ‘dirty’, purity and impurity, healthy and unhealthy environments, and addresses the implications of pollution with regard to discrimination, class, urban poverty, social hierarchies and ethnic segregation in cities.

Many people investigating the operation of large-scale environmentalist organizations see signs of power, knowledge and governance in their policies and projects. This collection indicates that such an analysis appears to be justified from one perspective, but not from another. The chapters in this collection show that the critics, concerned with the power of these organizations to impose their policies in different parts of the world, appear justified when we look at environmentalist visions and at organizational policies and programs. However, they are much less justified when we look at the practical operation of such organizations and their ability to generate and carry out projects intended to reshape the world.
Researchers have used a variety of techniques over the past century to gain fun- mental insights in the field of immunology and, as technology has advanced, so too has the ability of researchers to delve deeper into the biological mechanics of immunity. The immune system is exceedingly complex and must patrol the entire body to protect us from foreign invaders. This requires the immune system to be highly mobile and adaptable – able to respond to diverse microbial challenges while maintaining the ability to distinguish self from a foreign invader. This latter feature is of great importance because the immune system is equipped with toxic mediators, and a failure in self/non-self discrimination can result in serious diseases. Fortunately, in most cases, the immune system operates within the framework of its elegant design and protects us from diverse microbial challenges without initiating disease. Because the immune system is not confined to a single tissue, a comprehensive understanding of immunity requires that research be conducted at the molecular, cellular, and systems level. Immune cells often find customized solutions to h- dling microbial insults that depend on the tissue(s) in which the pathogen is found.
